It’s easy to think the quantity of followers on social media is important, because in the beginning these numbers were. For some marketers, more Facebook likes mean more revenue, so they keep trying to reap financial rewards by pumping their business page full of content, hoping to attract more followers.

What if we were to tell you likes don’t really matter anymore? Would you believe us? - Maybe not.

In all fairness, we understand. Social media is still relatively new. It was only 2004 when “The Facebook” launched, 2006 when Facebook dropped its educational policy to extend their network, and businesses only started developing brand pages in late 2007.

Can you believe it? We can’t! Hard to imagine there was a time you had to meet someone in person to find out what they had for breakfast and hear their stance on political views. Talk about face value.

But when you think about social media and its infancy, you can understand why there are some people who just refuse to let it grow up.

So we are here to remind you, it’s been 12 years – we’re not in high school anymore and popularity doesn’t matter. What does matter is great engagement.

The real value of your Facebook community is not the size, but the value obtained from engagement.

The viral power of Facebook is long gone and you now have to pay to play. Think of Facebook as less of a social network and more as a platform for reaching targeted consumers. By paying to play, your business page becomes a medium for reaching your audience. It’s less about constant content on a daily basis, but using advertising to target real flesh and blood customers in your area.

Organic reach has dropped to a staggering 3% and if you don’t want to pay for advertising, you’re going to have to get those conversations rolling. That’s all Facebook will be able to offer you regarding organic reach. When your audience starts talking, liking, and sharing your content, only then will your content will start reaching a bigger audience.

But we don’t say this to discourage you.

In fact studies have shown, this new process is actually better for local business owners who get 5 times the reach, 8 times the engagement level, and 40 times the overall impact.

Moral of the story? Don’t worry about making sure you have thousands of followers. But do make sure the followers you do have, engage with you because they are genuinely interested in your products and services.

If you are still interested in growing numbers, we suggest – no we declare – you have to pay for it with advertising. We promise its not as scary is it sounds. In fact, it’s shockingly affordable in comparison to traditional advertising. We’ve talked about it here if you need refresher.

We understand all these rules can wear on you, so if you have any questions you can contact us here!
