3 Ways To Take Your Site From Awkward To Awesome

Some people have friends who won’t tell them they have food stuck between their teeth. They let you sit there for – who knows how long – with the culprit shining like a beacon.

We just wanted to let you know we aren’t that kind of friend - We’ll tell ya.

But since we aren’t (regrettably) dining with you at present, we thought we would point out some website tips that will help you put your best “face” forward.

#1 Make sure you have an email subscription on your site!

In the world of online marketing - emails are gold, and you want to concentrate on signing up as many people as possible. And make sure they can sign up on every page of your website! You don’t want to miss anyone.

Make it easy on yourself and your visitors and put it in a fixed position that will appear on every page. There is a reason for this. *be prepared because we are about to drop some serious knowledge on you.

So – there’s a law (a scientific one, not a legal one) saying the time required to move to a targeted area (think “click” a link) is a function of the distance to the target and the size of the target.

Basically the closer the object is to us, and the larger the object is - the easier it will be to use.

Make it easy – make it visible, and the emails will come.

#2 Get all your social links on there!

Think of it as an infinite loop of togetherness between you and your visitors.

By leading them to your social channels, you open the floor up for conversation and you want to make sure you give people different options.

But notice we didn’t just say social “media”, because we’re lumping in the importance of putting a contact page on your site as well.

That means in addition to listing your social media icons – you also need a separate contact page. While some people will prefer to contact you via social media, others may prefer to fill out a contact form or email you directly.

We’ll leave it up to you to design a contact form or have you email address listed. As long as a contact option is there – we’re happy.

#3 Keep your site’s design clean and simple

Get ready because we have another awesome Law for you.

Hick’s law says with every additional choice increases the time required to make a decision.

According to studies you only have two tenths of a second to make a great first impression. Don’t let a crowded space kill the mood.

To make a great first impression, think about layout and keeping everything important on your site about the “fold”.

Do you remember newspapers?

Yeah, well - they had the right idea. The major story (headline, image, intro paragraph) was above the fold. Everything they needed to tell you was right there for you to see and you didn’t even need to open it to get the full idea.

A website’s “fold” is what you see on a page with out having to scroll down.

What exactly should be above the fold? Navigation menu, logo, image, and social-media icons.

These are the things our eyes focus on after we’ve made our first initial judgement.

Psst - They’re also listed in order of importance!

It’s probably the shortest list we will ever create, but there is a lot you can focus on.

So get out there and get your tidy on.

Don’t want to do it? That’s fine, we actually like designing sites and will happily do it for you. Just click here.

Your friends,

The Moxie Team
