New apps pop up all the time, and sometimes it can be hard to determine which ones are worthwhile and which ones are as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

The newest buzz worthy app to hit the scene is Periscope, a live streaming app that allows you to post and view videos in real time from anywhere in the world.

Pretty impressive if you ask us, so we decided to check it out.

We are always about honesty here at Moxie Media & Management, and the truth is we couldn’t find our way out of a paper bag with this one. The design is beautiful and the concept amazing, but navigation was tricky.

A serious half eaten lunch and lots of “hmmmm(s)” later, we manage to crack the code.

Since we believe not finishing your plate is a crime, we thought we would share what Periscope is and how to use it, so you don’t have to forfeit a good meal either.

First things first, Periscope is owned by Twitter. So, as you can already guess the concept of real time news and information is at the forefront of it’s purpose. However, live streaming can only be viewed for up to 24hrs after a video has been posted, unlike Twitter, which will keep tweets until deleted by you.

It’s really great for businesses and public figures because it gives customers and fans behind-the-scenes, VIP access, instantly.

Who doesn’t want some of that?

Are you interested in using it? Great, here are you first baby-steps after you download the app to your phone.

  • Sign-in with your Twitter account or phone number

*If you use your twitter account, after sign-in you will be given suggested people to follow based on your twitter profile. A blue check mark means they are actually using Persicope too.

  • The TV Icon: shows you a list of recent live broadcasts from people you follow

  • The World Icon: Allows you to see broadcasts that have recently been added from around the world.

  • The Broadcast Icon: What you will tap when you are ready to make your own recording.

  • The People Icon: A list of suggested users to follow. Also, what you will tap to reach the search button in the top left corner.

Now let’s talk about Doing Your Own Broadcasts - here are the basic steps to get you started!

Step 1: Click the Broadcast Icon

Step 2: Activate the camera and microphone to ensure your viewers can see and here you

Step 3: Arrow Icon: Activate location

Step 4: Lock Icon: Allows you to make the broadcast private (Which we wouldn’t recommend. Keep it public for maximum exposure)

Step 5: Chat Icon: Controls who can comment on the video. Tap it once to allow only your followers. Leave it untapped and anyone from around the world can leave a comment.

Step 6: Twitter Icon: Allows you to post it directly to twitter once its finished!

Once your broadcast is done, your users will be notified to check it out!

As for engaging, there are hearts to give and receive. If you like something you are watching, just double tap the screen. If you receive hearts that means someone likes what you are doing. As you can imagine, the more hearts you get the higher you will rank on the “Featured” List.

As a viewer you can chat live by writing in the “say something” box found at the bottom of your screen while you are viewing. If you aren’t feeling chatty, swipe left and hit “hide chat”.
